The Israeli response to Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack, followed by a twelve-day war with Iran, is reshaping the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East. Within Iran, the cumulative pressures of war—compounding long-standing social, economic, and political strains—have exposed new vulnerabilities in the Islamic Republic. This talk examines how power is currently structured inside Iran at a moment of heightened external confrontation and internal stress. Where does real authority now reside? How resilient is the system of governance, and what are the prospects for leadership succession or internal fracture? Finally, the presentation explores how Iran’s ruling elite is likely to manage these overlapping crises and what this moment may reveal about the future trajectory of the Iranian state.
