General Meeting: "Political Economy and The African-American Experience" by Mr. Kamaal Martin

AIAP would like to invite you to its sixth virtual general meeting in 2020. We will hold this meeting on September 30th from 7 to 8 pm. Our guest speaker is Mr. Kamaal Martin, who is chair of the NAACP San Diego’s Political Action Committee. 

Mr. Martin will present "A Brief Survey: Political Economy and the African-American Experience". He will provide an overview of the intersections of race, economics, policy and politics. With special attention paid to the Black Lives Matter movement, he will discuss the black experience in America from a number of perspectives: territorial: residential bounded and segregated, racial/ ethnic: life-chances, opportunities, social status and human worth, socio-economic/institutional: community institutions, organizations and enterprises, political: both an expression and product of black powerlessness to prevent its establishment or end its existence, psycho- cultural: views and values of a proud and productive community. Mr. Martin will present in English.

Mr. Kamaal Martin is a graduate of the University of Oregon, with a B.A. in History and an M.A. in International Studies, Mr. Martin serves on the board of directors of Project New Village 501(c3), and is chair of the NAACP San Diego’s Political Action Committee.

Kamaal’s passions are equitable community development, education, finance, improving our local food system and raising the quality of life throughout the Greater Southeastern San Diego.

Before opening his own boutique financial services and economic development consulting firm in 2020, he developed a unique skill set and network through professional experiences including: Director, Advocacy (Southern California) with the California Charter School Association, Adjunct Faculty (Political Science) in the San Diego Community College District, Government Relations Specialist with the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority and years as a staffer in the California State Assembly, including roles as Field Director, Special Assistant to the Speaker and District Director.

Mr. Martin is currently a 2020 mayoral candidate in Lemon Grove, CA, where he lives with his partner and two teenage daughters.
