Excerpts from “Year of Turmoil” by Abbas Maroufi”
These few lines capture to the fullest extent the core of Abbas Maroufi’s writings. Relying upon the vast and varied heritage of Persian classical literature, Maroufi has developed a voice and style that is engaging, compelling, and all encompassing. A graduate of Fine Arts from Tehran University, he has demonstrated his prodigious artistic talent by serving as the director of Tehran Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and stage manager of Roodaki Hall for performing arts, one of the most prestigious artistic venues in Iran. His outstanding career was recognized by such awards as “Heinrich Boll Artist in Residernce” and translations of his books into German have received awards from “Arnold Zweig Foundation” and “Surkamp Philosophy Foundation”. His social activism and relentless effort to uphold freedom of expression put him at odds with Iranian authorities and led to his forced migration to Germany on 1991. Maroufi is currently running Gardoon Press and Publighing House. Maroufi should be commended for his enthusiasm to disseminate his knowledge to emerging generation of young writers through organizing workshops and literary awards.
