Depression is the emotional experiences ranging from the occasional periods of sadness to clinical syndromes. Depression can be triggered by a stressor, but it can also start for no apparent reason. A depressed person can feel sad, empty, worried, hopeless, irritable and other symptoms which will affect his daily activities, including his relationships. Depression is exhibited across all cultures, nationalities, genders, and generations. Iranians are no exception.

During the past 14 years, Dr. Nakhshab has treated and worked with several hundred Iranians who have exhibited some form of depression. He says: at first, when patients came to see me, their issues ranged from having relationship problems with their spouses, or were upset about their children not listening to them, or in-laws were interfering in their lives, or parents did not understand them, or other reasons. However, most of them were just depressed.
In this presentation, Dr. Nakhshab will emphasize the uniqueness of depression among Iranians and how it may differ, in most cases, from the main stream Americans. He will also talk about treatment of depression. |
